The United Church of Christ in Canton exists to meet its members' needs for Christian worship, fellowship and service. We are Congregationalist in organization, which means that we are responsible for our own life as a church. Decisions affecting our life together are made by the members, either through elected boards and committees, or through the whole Church Membership, gathered in a regular or special meeting.
The U.C.C. rejects human hierarchies. We acknowledge Jesus Christ as the sole Head of the Church, believing His promise to be present wherever two or more are gathered in His Name. We believe in God's active, guiding presence through the Holy Spirit.
We hear God's voice in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, which we receive as our final authority in matters of faith and practice. We believe in God's faithfulness over the centuries, and therefore look for the example of faithful Christians in other times and places, especially as their insights are stated in the classic creeds of the Church and the basic insights of the Protestant Reformers. We recognize that some ministries are best carried on in cooperation with other Christians, and therefore we maintain our affiliation with the United Church of Christ, a denomination born in 1957 when the Congregational Christian Churches united with the Evangelical and Reformed Churches. With the U.C.C. we recognize all Christians as kindred in Christ.
We believe each individual is responsible before God to grow in faith and love, and that each believer is responsible to make the faith of the historic Church his or her own. Therefore, we encourage members to seek God's favor and direction as a personal quest.
